Vinyl wallpapers offer a wide range of colors and finishes, are durable and easier to clean than other wallcoverings, and are fire-retardant. There are four types of vinyl wallpapers. Each has its own qualities, and some work better than others in certain applications. Let’s have a look at your options!

Solid Vinyl

Solid vinyl – as the name implies – is made completely of vinyl. It is waterproof, making it ideal for bathrooms and kitchens, where moisture and humidity levels run high. Resistant to scratching and tearing, it is durable and holds up longer than other wallcoverings. It is also easy to clean and resists the challenges of kids’ bedrooms and playrooms.

Solid vinyl wallpaper is available in three versions that differ in an application process:

Self-stick: Requires peeling off the backing before placing the paper.

Pre-pasted: Wetting the material before hanging is necessary.

Non-pasted: Involves application of additional paste before adhering to the wall.

Paper-Backed Vinyl

It consists of a paper backing laminated to a solid sheet of vinyl. Paper-backed vinyl is thicker than most types of wallcovering and provides greater durability. It is washable, while very resistant against moisture and stains, and can be used in the majority of house areas, except for bathrooms with insufficient exhaust fans.

Extra care must be taken when installing this type of wallpaper. In extremely humid rooms, the paper backing can absorb moisture at the seams, causing the paper and vinyl sheets to separate from each other or delaminate. With long-term or repeated overexposure to humidity, the wallpaper will gradually pull away from the wall and you will need to replace it.

Vinyl-Coated

This is the most common type of wallpaper used in homes. It is paper, coated with a protective layer of acrylic vinyl. A great asset of this structure is that it makes the wallcovering scrubbable, easy to clean, and resistant to heat, humidity, and grease.

We recommend using the material in high-traffic areas, such as kitchens, bathrooms, family rooms, and children’s bedrooms. Dirt and crayon marks can be scrubbed without worry. You won’t rip the paper! Vinyl-coated wallpaper is often preferred over solid vinyl wallpaper because it is strippable and much easier to remove (solid vinyl is highly impervious to water).

Fabric-Backed Vinyl

A layer of woven fabric is laminated to a solid vinyl sheet with decorative patterns and finishes. Easy to clean, scrubbable, and highly durable, this wallcovering is another excellent choice for high-traffic areas such as entryways, kid’s rooms, dens, kitchens, and bathrooms.
